Sponsor a Child in Kenya

Why do children in Kenya need sponsors?

Many children in Kenya live in extreme poverty where they struggle to even get one meal a day. Many are orphaned through HIV/AIDS and fend for themselves or live with an ageing grandparent, who has no income to feed them. Many are too poor to go to school, some are left on the streets, and certainly a large number have never knowingly experienced even a hug.

What help am I giving when I sponsor a child?

Sponsoring a child means you are giving ongoing care for a vulnerable child. This means providing food, healthcare, school uniform, shoes, and contributing to the cost of education, for as long as they are in full-time education or training. You will literally change their lives and enable them to learn life skills and a vocation so that one day they will be able to work and break the cycle of poverty.

How much does it cost to sponsor a child?

We do not ask for a set figure from sponsors, though the average monthly donation is just £26. This will feed, clothe, and educate a child through primary school. If they progress to secondary school or on into tertiary education, the costs increase significantly, but the balance of this is borne by KCT from special or general funds. One-off or occasional gifts towards these costs are welcome.

Will I be able to talk to my child?

Yes. We encourage letter writing (or emails), which can be passed to your child, and your child will write back. We will do our best to send you regular photos and updates, and your child will be very happy to receive photos and news from you. They feel a great connection with the person who has shown they care enough to choose them. They want to make you proud of them through their school results and tell you about their lives. Your encouragement in a letter and your pride in their schoolwork and achievements go a very long way and help fill the gaping hole that would normally be satisfied by a parent.

How long is sponsorship for?

We ask that you can commit for a reasonable period of time but, of course, you can end the sponsorship whenever you wish to. As already mentioned, our commitment at KCT is to support the children as long as they remain in education or training. It is such a joy when a child, who first came to us dressed in rags and in desperate need of a good meal, emerges several years later dressed in gown and mortar board, holding their degree certificate and grinning from ear to ear. What a privilege to play a part in such a transformation in the life of just one child. Not every child’s journey will be the same, but our desire is to see each one fulfil their greatest potential, whatever that looks like. Please, will you join us in that journey? You won’t regret it.

How do I sponsor a child?

Sponsoring a child is simple and life-changing! Below are just a few of the children waiting for a caring sponsor, but there are many more hoping for your support. Reach out to us and we’ll be delighted to share more profiles and help you find a child to make a real difference in their life.

This is Bell. He is eight years old.

Bell lives with his grandmother in a rural community. His mother works as a nanny in Nairobi, but her income is limited, making it hard to cover school fees for Bell and his two siblings. Bell is eager to learn and dreams of continuing his education. With a sponsor’s support, he can stay in school and build a brighter future.

This is Mary. She is 7 years old.

Mary lost her father the year she was born and now lives with her mother, who works hard as a casual laborer to provide for the family. With a sponsor’s support, Mary can continue her education and have the chance to thrive, bringing hope and stability to her life.
